How to Keep Your Vape Cartridge Flowing in Cold Weather

Six tips and tricks from the Heylo Team to keep elevated through cold winter nights.

In the Pacific Northwest and much of the country cold (or cold-ish) weather is coming with the change of season. While it brings cozy nights and potential snow-filled adventures, it can also bring some challenges for vape cartridge enthusiasts. At Heylo, we’ve noticed how cold temperatures can impact cannabis oil cartridges, making it harder for you to enjoy your favorite strains. Don’t worry, though – we’ve got you covered with tips and tricks to keep your vape flowing, even when the temperature drops.

Why Does Cold Weather Affect Vape Cartridges?

Cannabis oil naturally thickens when exposed to cold temperatures. If you’ve ever noticed your cartridge feeling clogged or taking longer to produce vapor in winter, it’s because the oil inside has become more viscous (here’s a breakdown of different cannabis oil types). This can restrict airflow, making it difficult for the heating element to vaporize the oil properly.

Tips for Troubleshooting Vape Cartridges in Cold Weather

1. Store Your Cartridge at Room Temperature

Avoid leaving your vape cartridge in cold places like your car, garage, or an outdoor jacket pocket. Keep it indoors at room temperature when not in use. This helps maintain the oil’s consistency, reducing the chances of clogs or poor performance.

2. Warm Up Your Cartridge Before Use

If your cartridge feels cold or clogged, gently warm it up before hitting it. Here are a few safe ways to do this:

  • Hold the cartridge in your hands for a minute or two.
  • Place it in a warm (but not hot) spot, like next to a cup of tea or inside your pocket.
  • Use a hair dryer on a low heat setting, holding it at least six inches away.

Avoid exposing your cartridge to excessive heat, as this can damage the oil and cartridge components. Opt for safe hardware options made of glass (not plastic) and 100% ceramic (like Heylo, Treehaus, and Yolo).

3. Prime Your Cartridge

Before taking a puff, try a "priming pull." This means inhaling gently through the cartridge without pressing the button (if your vape has one). This can help loosen the oil and get it flowing to the coil.

4. Use the Right Battery Setting

If your vape pen has adjustable temperature settings, consider increasing the voltage slightly in cold weather. This provides more heat to vaporize the thicker oil. However, don’t overdo it – too much heat can degrade the oil’s flavor and potency.

5. Clean the Cartridge and Battery Connection

Cold weather can exacerbate buildup around the connection points of your cartridge and battery. Regularly clean these areas with a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol to ensure a good connection and proper heating.

6. Choose Winter-Friendly Oil

Some cannabis oils have higher levels of terpenes and lower viscosites that perform better in colder conditions. With every vape cartridge Heylo makes, our goal is the same - the best possible experience. We achieve this with a simple principle, making oil that is as close to the plant as possible. When to Replace Your Cartridge

If you’ve tried these tips and your cartridge still isn’t performing, it might be time for a replacement. Prolonged exposure to cold can sometimes cause irreparable issues, especially if the oil has separated or the hardware has been damaged.

Cold weather doesn’t have to put a damper on your vaping experience. With these simple tips, you can keep your Heylo cartridge performing beautifully all season long. And remember – quality matters.
